Standard

Perhaps the name predates the word ‘orange’ in the English language – rather like the “Robin Redbreast” – whose breast is clearly orange not red – but the name predates the arrival of ‘orange’ as the name of a colour in the English language which did not occur until the 16th century. Clearly these Bumblebees (one of over 250 species in the British Isles) have an orange ‘tail’ – not a red one.

We have a small area of meadow in our garden which is where these bees were photographed on the 7th July 2015.
